Curatorial notes

Alessandro Mastro-Valerio created this black and white print titled 'Motif In A Seascape-Three Nudes'. Born in Italy in 1887, Mastro-Valerio’s work exists in the context of early 20th century European modernism, but with a deeply personal and mystical edge. The print presents three abstracted female nudes within an ambiguous seascape, their forms rendered through sinuous lines and contrasting textures. Consider how traditional representations of the female nude often serve the male gaze. Here, however, the figures are deconstructed and reintegrated into the natural world, resisting objectification and instead suggesting a sense of elemental connection. The flowing lines, almost like currents, evoke both the fluidity of water and the contours of the human body. This print invites us to contemplate the relationship between humanity and nature, and how the female form can be a vessel for expressing the profound interconnectedness of all things.
