Daan Lemaire’s untitled painting consists of broad gestural marks in red, black, and white. I imagine Lemaire in the act of painting, layering color upon color. A wash of white, then a surge of deep red. He pauses, considers, then sweeps in with black, pushing and pulling the paint across the surface. It’s a dance between control and chance, where each stroke informs the next. The texture seems smooth and almost translucent, as if the colours are bleeding into the surface and the painting is breathing. I love how the red dominates, almost like a wound or maybe a sunset, you choose! It reminds me of some of the things Guston did, but with a lighter touch, more air, and maybe more uncertainty. It feels like these artists were in conversation, each pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. Painting is an ongoing exploration. Artists build on the ideas of those who came before, forging new paths while honoring the past. And that’s what makes it so exciting – the possibilities are endless.
