Rocco Navigato made this watercolor of a letter box, and what strikes me is the attention to detail, almost obsessive in the rendering of each tiny nail head. It’s like Navigato is inviting us to slow down, to really look at the craft and care that goes into making even an everyday object. The box itself, with its dark wood and plush pink interior, has a certain opulent charm. You can almost feel the soft velvet lining, imagine the weight of the box in your hands. But then there are these tiny, almost manic details, like the rendering of the nail heads along the edges or the golden ornamentation on the lid. Each one is carefully placed, and it creates this tension between the overall form and the obsessive mark-making. It makes you wonder about the artist's intention, the way they looked at the world. Maybe he was inspired by the linear precision of someone like Agnes Martin, or maybe the object's ornamentation reminded him of Guston’s piles of junk, the everyday, transformed through the act of painting. Either way, it’s a reminder that art is always in conversation with itself, across time and across mediums.
