This is a drawing by Picasso called "Minotaur attacking an amazone," and, just wow, the man knew how to get right to the heart of a scene, didn’t he? Imagine him with his pen just scratching away, and building up this frenzied, almost scribbled, image out of nothing but lines. You know, I bet he wasn’t even thinking about perfection or beauty. He was too busy trying to capture a feeling of pure, primal energy. The Amazon is all curves and vulnerable flesh, while the Minotaur is this chaotic mass of dark, bristling lines, all violent intent. You can almost feel his breath. And it’s all there in the scratch of the pen, the weight of the ink, the way he uses these simple marks to tell a really old story. We see echoes of other artists, Goya maybe, but Picasso takes it somewhere totally new. He takes a classical scene and trashes it. What a guy!
