Rashid Al Khalifa made "In Colour" out of aluminium, the cool metal a backdrop to a whole field of upright, narrow rectangles painted in all sorts of shades. I wonder, was this something he planned out meticulously, or did he just start laying down the colours, letting the painting guide him? There’s something about the rigidity of the grid that makes the colours pop even more. Each little rectangle is like a note in a chord. It's a real exercise in colour theory. I can see him, squinting, stepping back, tweaking the shades. You know, I'm reminded of Bridget Riley or Sean Scully's work with geometric abstraction and colour, but there's something so grounded and handmade about this, too. I think we can all relate to the process of just experimenting, putting colors together and seeing what happens.
