Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this study sheet with graphite, showing a man’s head, a creature, and some furniture. Cachet was a Dutch artist, born in the mid-19th century and dying mid-20th. This sketch may have been produced in preparation for a larger work. The Rijksmuseum holds a large collection of the artist's work, showing his interest in decorative arts and his commitment to the ideals of the Dutch Arts and Crafts movement. This movement was a reaction against industrialization, seeking to promote traditional craftsmanship and design, and valuing hand-made items. The study sheet gives us a glimpse into the artistic process of the time. As a historian, I am interested in how institutions like museums collect and display art, shaping our understanding of the past and the present. By studying the artist’s drawings, we can better understand the cultural and historical context in which art is made.
