Duccio painted this triptych panel of the Madonna and Child, with angels and prophets, using tempera and gold leaf on wood in Italy around 1300. It is interesting to consider how the social conditions of the time may have shaped its production. This work reflects a society deeply rooted in religious belief, and specifically the central role of the Virgin Mary within it. The use of gold leaf creates an ethereal quality, fitting for the representation of holy figures and the architecture of the artwork is in itself a reference to the architecture of the church, where the artwork would have originally been displayed. Works like this one played a key role in religious life, as they would have provided a tangible focal point for devotion and prayer, and would have reinforced the social norms of the time. By studying the historical context in which it was created, we can better understand the public role of art. Resources such as historical documents, religious texts, and studies of artistic patronage can all shed light on the meaning of Duccio’s work.
