Joannes Willem Vos created "Scènes uit het kantonnementsleven, 1830-1831", using an unstated medium. Vos produced this work during a turbulent period in Dutch history. 1830 marked the start of the Belgian Revolution, a time of great political and social upheaval. The lithograph offers glimpses into the daily life of soldiers. There are scenes depicting a range of activities, from the mundane, such as eating and resting, to the active, such as hunting, and drilling. The soldiers, presumably men, are the central figures. The presence of only one female figure implies a gendered division of labor. While the soldiers engage in public and military life, women's roles are relegated to the domestic sphere. Vos’ work gives insight into the experiences of those who lived through the Belgian Revolution. It invites us to consider the identities and histories of those involved, reflecting on how conflicts shape not only nations but individual lives.
