Dan Christensen made this painting with a loose approach to brushwork and a concise colour palette. He makes me think of a painter with a plan, who can also let things happen on the canvas. The white paint dances across a blue ground in short, rhythmic strokes and there’s a real push and pull between the colours. The surface is tactile, like you can feel the gesture of the artist as they laid down each stroke. Those three circles in the centre, they're the anchors, right? They bleed into the white, creating soft edges. They remind me of planets or strange new age symbols. Christensen's painting style is reminiscent of Jules Olitski; they both play with colour and gesture in a way that feels both thoughtful and improvisational. Ultimately, this piece invites us to embrace the unpredictable and find beauty in the process itself.
