Karl Isakson made this painting, "Portrait of the Painter Karl Schou," using expressive brushstrokes and a limited color palette. I imagine Isakson layering the paint, making these marks with feeling, to somehow capture what’s inside this other painter, Karl Schou. It’s almost like he's building a sculpture out of paint. Look at the way the blue paint defines his suit, but also dissolves into the background, blurring the lines between figure and ground. I wonder what Isakson and Schou talked about? Painting, probably. You know, there’s a real conversation going on in paintings. Artists build on each other's ideas, responding, challenging, and inspiring. Each brushstroke seems loaded with a feeling, an intention, like an unspoken language between them. In the end, it opens up a space for you and me to think and feel. It's all so deeply personal but remains open-ended and wonderfully unresolved.
