Allegory of Prosperity 

Józef Mehoffer crafted this stained glass work, Allegory of Prosperity, where potent symbols offer a glimpse into the artist's vision of prosperity and fortune. The houses atop each panel immediately suggest material wealth and stability, but it is the gemstone motifs below that capture our attention. These faceted jewels are rendered with human faces. Consider the recurring presence of paired cherubic figures supporting these gem-like faces: we find echoes of classical caryatids, figures that bear architectural burdens. These jewels recall ancient beliefs in the protective and talismanic powers of precious stones. In Mesopotamia, gemstones were inscribed with prayers and spells, and worn for protection. Mehoffer’s usage merges classical architectural motifs with ancient talismanic traditions, conjuring a complex interplay between material wealth and the deeper, often subconscious, desire for protection and well-being. This piece invites us to contemplate how symbols of prosperity evolve and adapt across cultures and eras.
