Matthijs Maris made this drawing called "Studie" with graphite on paper, and it is now in the Rijksmuseum. Though simple, the graphite stick is a powerful tool. Graphite’s powdery texture allows it to be easily layered, creating subtle gradations of tone. Look closely, and you can see how Maris exploits this quality, building up the image through a dense network of lines. While the drawing may seem spontaneous, the very act of sketching is a skilled practice. Maris has chosen a readily available material, connecting his work to broader social issues of labor and politics. The ease of production belies the artistic labor involved. This work challenges traditional distinctions between fine art and craft, inviting us to recognize the artistry inherent in simple materials and processes.
