Curatorial notes

Giovanni Girolamo Frezza created this print of Matilda of Canossa's tomb, sometime between the late 17th and early 18th century. It's made with etching and engraving techniques, printed on paper, and then selectively colored. The linear precision of the engraving and the controlled application of color creates a delicate, but precise image. The print is not just a record, but an interpretation. You can see that in the way Frezza uses line and color to emphasize certain details: the texture of the stone, the drapery of Matilda's robes, and the cherubic figures adorning the tomb. Prints like these circulated widely in the early modern period. They served not just as art objects but also as documents, spreading knowledge and taste across geographic boundaries. The artistry in the making of this print adds layers of meaning, transforming a depiction into a statement about skill, taste, and the enduring power of memory.
