Editor: Well, the setting sun might represent the end of the workday and transition to rest, making the smoking chimney feel even more like a domestic sanctuary. But why is that important culturally? Curator: Consider the era. Late 19th-century Denmark was undergoing significant social and industrial change. Images of rural life became powerful symbols of national identity, of stability amid that change. Doesn't it feel timeless, and do you see this symbolism appearing later in the art canon?
