Here is an anonymous photograph made sometime in the past, documenting buildings in an open landscape. The sepia tone lends this image a nostalgic feel, like an old memory. I’m drawn to the buildings themselves - their simple, repeated forms suggest a kind of communal structure. You can almost feel the material of the structure. The rhythm of the vertical wooden poles that make up the walls is almost like brushstrokes, creating a sense of texture and depth. The way the light falls across the scene, it gives a sense of place. It makes me think of Edward Hopper. Both artists have a way of capturing a sense of isolation and quiet contemplation in their work. It’s a reminder that art is not just about what we see, but how we see it. It invites us to slow down, to look closely, and to find beauty in the everyday.
