Editor: This is "Prøveblad med italienerinde siddende i en døråbning; ansigtsstudier; italiensk byinteriør; samt forskellige skraveringsteknikker" a print executed with pencil, etching and paper. It was produced in 1829 by August Krafft and currently rests at the SMK. It looks more like an exercise sheet than a finished piece to me. How do you interpret it? Curator: From a formal perspective, it's interesting to note the juxtaposition of different studies on one plane. We observe contrasts in shading, figure and composition. Can you describe the interplay between these disparate elements, paying particular attention to the different ways Krafft delineates form? Editor: The contrast in shading creates very separate scenes and shapes on the page; it really accentuates each section's uniqueness within the picture plane. However, I do observe consistencies in the cross-hatching, especially in the face studies at the top of the work. Curator: Precisely. Note how Krafft's employment of varied mark-making not only defines tonal values but also segregates each study in an intellectual, even a semiotic sense. Observe how your eye navigates the page, pausing at each composition due to this structural clarity. How does this piecemeal quality change how you experience the piece? Editor: I hadn't considered that. I thought of it as practice work, but the organisation provides each study its own independent value, which forces the viewer to give them consideration independently as well. Curator: The plate is designed to do precisely that. To explore the interplay of form and light with objective consideration is crucial to understand academic formalism.
