Editor: This is "Zelfportret: B-1-1, 22 februari," or "Self-Portrait: B-1-1, February 22," possibly from 1942, by Cor van Teeseling, made with pencil on paper. It's strikingly simple and somber. The almost hesitant lines create an unsettling mood, in my opinion. What compositional elements do you focus on when you view this piece? Curator: My attention is drawn to the interplay between the lines and the implied volume they create. Observe the carefully constructed network of strokes defining the hair, in contrast to the smoother planes indicating the face. What does that contrast evoke? Editor: The contrast you've described... perhaps it accentuates the thoughtful or intellectual aspect conveyed by the face, as separate from the more emotional sphere of the self, symbolized by the turbulent hair? I'm wondering, though, is there an apparent technique that underscores this dynamic? Curator: Indeed. Consider the economy of line throughout. The artist uses very few, very precise marks to delineate form and shadow. Notice where the pencil pressure is heaviest and how that shapes our perception. Editor: You're right, I notice that it brings out a real sense of form, a depth of character that’s rather unexpected. So the effectiveness comes, perhaps counter-intuitively, from the controlled nature of those delicate strokes? Curator: Precisely. It is a potent illustration of how restraint, carefully employed, can amplify the emotional impact. Van Teeseling wields restraint here as his guiding hand. Editor: It’s incredible how much emotion he can evoke with seemingly so little effort. Curator: A great lesson in less is more. The visual components work together to offer us a remarkable experience.
