Victor Müller created this pencil drawing, “Tree on a Meadow,” capturing more than just a tree, but also a symbol deeply rooted in our collective psyche. The tree, in its rich detail, is a universal emblem of life, growth, and connection. Think of the ancient Tree of Life, found across cultures, from Norse mythology's Yggdrasil to the sacred trees of the East. Each tells a story of interconnectedness, of roots delving into the past and branches reaching for the future. Notice how this tree stands alone, a silent witness. This is echoed in Caspar David Friedrich’s solitary figures contemplating nature, sharing a sense of introspection and the sublime. Just as the serpent in the Garden of Eden is seen as a symbol of temptation, the tree can also represent knowledge and choice. This symbol is not linear; it's a constant, cyclical progression, resurfacing, evolving, and taking on new meanings in each epoch.
