Camel

Curatorial notes
Johann Rudolph Schellenberg created this drawing of a camel using red and black chalk, capturing the animal's form with delicate strokes. Notice the camel’s compact body. It is centrally positioned with a load strapped to its back. Schellenberg masterfully uses the chalk to define the textures: the soft fur of the camel contrasts with the rougher materials of its burden. Red chalk dominates the body, while black chalk casts shadows to define its features. The composition is simple, yet the placement of the camel on the page emphasizes its presence. Schellenberg's choice of medium and color palette enhances the drawing's structural elements. The minimalist use of color directs our focus to the shape and texture, and this adds to the artwork's overall impact. The unfinished quality of the drawing, with its sketch-like background, adds to its appeal, inviting us to consider the camel not just as a subject, but as a study in form and texture.
