This is a photographic reproduction by Fratelli Alinari of Andrea da Firenze's fresco "Renier van Pisa neemt het kluizenaarskleed aan" (Renier of Pisa Takes the Hermit's Robe) in the Camposanto in Pisa, Italy. Andrea da Firenze worked in the fresco technique, which meant applying pigments to wet plaster. The work was thus literally fused to the architecture. This is labor-intensive, and requires great skill in color mixing, and an ability to work quickly before the plaster dries. The Alinari brothers made this photographic reproduction. Their work allowed for the wider distribution of the fresco's image, and provided a different type of access. It allowed one to see the fresco in a portable format, even if it loses the tactile quality of the original artwork. Ultimately, this photograph embodies a complex interplay of materials, labor, and cultural dissemination, underlining how both the original fresco and its reproduction participate in a broader social and economic landscape.
