Curatorial notes
Niko Pirosmani painted this self-portrait, sized 38 by 49 centimeters, sometime before his death in 1918. Pirosmani lived during a period of immense social and political upheaval in Georgia, marked by Russian imperialism, economic transformation, and the rise of Georgian nationalism. His identity as a self-taught artist from a peasant background set him apart from the academic art circles of his time. He navigated a society undergoing rapid modernization while holding onto his cultural roots. Pirosmani’s self-portrait presents a figure in traditional Georgian attire, a statement of cultural pride, and perhaps, a negotiation of his identity within a changing world. The direct gaze and somewhat solemn expression convey a sense of self-awareness and introspection. The portrait is a window into the soul of an artist who remained deeply connected to his cultural heritage, offering a poignant reflection on identity, tradition, and the self.
