Pieter Bartholomeusz. Barbiers created this drawing, Twee werkende figuren bij een hoeve, with pen in the late 18th or early 19th century. Barbiers lived through a period of significant political and social upheaval. In this artwork, the figures' placement feels deliberate, perhaps reflecting the social hierarchies of the time. The laboring figures at the farm represent the working class, their lives deeply intertwined with the land. I wonder what their stories were. What were their hopes, dreams, and daily struggles? The simplicity of their attire and the modesty of their labor contrast sharply with the opulence enjoyed by the elite. Barbiers invites us to consider the value and dignity of labor, perhaps challenging the prevailing social norms of the time. By focusing on the lives of ordinary people, Barbiers elevates the everyday, reminding us of the importance of empathy and understanding across social divides.
