Curator: Roberts's "Study for 'Hampstead Fair'" presents us with a preparatory drawing, around 1976 x 121 mm, unveiling the skeletal structure of a larger composition. What strikes you initially? Editor: The gridded paper speaks volumes about Roberts’ meticulous planning and production process. The geometric forms, almost robotic figures, hint at social commentary about the working class perhaps? Curator: It certainly highlights the mechanization of leisure. Considering Roberts’ background in lithography, this preparatory sketch demonstrates a deep understanding of reproduction and distribution. Editor: This study is fascinating within the history of leisure. It's revealing how society channels energy into escapism while simultaneously reinforcing class structures. The figures almost seem trapped within the fair's rigid structure. Curator: I agree, the sketch reveals the labor and the social implications of what we often perceive as carefree amusement. Editor: Exactly. I appreciate how this reveals the underlying tensions between enjoyment and societal constraints. Curator: And I am very interested in how this study makes visible the process, the steps involved in the making of art.
