Maria Bozoky made this drawing of Prague with crayons, and it looks like she was really feeling the city's energy. Look at these crayon lines – they are so raw and immediate. I imagine Maria standing in front of these towers, her hand moving quickly, trying to capture the essence of Prague. The towers reach up with such dark force, and you get the sense of the city being almost alive, like it's breathing. It's pretty gothic. I wonder if the artist was thinking about other artists who drew cityscapes, like Lyonel Feininger? It has that same spiky, nervous energy. The red of the bird really pops; maybe it's a symbol? These colours are loaded – it makes me think about how artists are always in conversation with each other, riffing off the past, and making something totally new. It's like Maria put her own spin on Prague, and now we get to see it through her eyes.
