Robert Frank created this series of images on 11th street using film, and the overall effect is one of a fractured, unpredictable narrative. I can imagine Robert Frank walking down the street, camera in hand, trying to distill a feeling or a mood through the lens. The way he captures light and shadow reminds me of some of the early modernist painters, like the Italian Futurists, who were trying to capture movement and dynamism. The images are grainy and a little blurry, but that only adds to the sense of immediacy, like you're right there with him, experiencing the city in real time. I wonder what he was thinking about when he composed these shots? Was he interested in capturing the energy of the street, or was he looking for something more personal and intimate? Ultimately, it's not about finding a single, definitive meaning, it’s about entering into a dialogue with the work and allowing yourself to be moved by its strange, haunting beauty.
