Editor: Here we have Alois Kolb's "Finale," a monochromatic print. I'm immediately struck by the vulnerability of the figure and the almost dreamlike quality of the image. What stands out to you? Curator: I am drawn to the process of creation. Consider the labor involved in producing this print, the materials used, and how those choices impact the final product, and the social context in which Kolb's work was consumed. How do those elements change your understanding? Editor: Thinking about it as a manufactured object does make me consider the audience it was made for, and maybe the nude is not so vulnerable after all. Curator: Exactly. We move from a purely aesthetic reaction to a more socially aware position. Seeing the work through the lens of its making helps reveal its purpose. Editor: I see how important it is to think of the materials and manufacturing involved. Thanks!
