Curatorial notes

This engraving of Saint John writing the Gospel was created around 1600 by Wierix and is now held at the Rijksmuseum. The image is dominated by the detailed and precise lines that define the figures and the landscape, creating a sense of depth and texture. The contrasting areas of light and shadow pull the viewer's eye towards the saint. The composition presents a clear juxtaposition between the earthly and the divine. John is seated in a natural setting but is also in contact with a mystical, ethereal realm. The lines of the landscape draw the eye toward John, and the interplay of light and shadow emphasize the textures of the eagle and the saint’s garments. The structure of the piece invites us to interpret the layers of meaning. Ultimately, it functions as a complex sign, inviting ongoing interpretation of faith and representation.
