Paul Gauguin captured "Still Life with Peaches" using oil on canvas. The ripened peaches, symbols of summer's bounty, are arranged within a decorative bowl and scattered nearby. Consider the history of fruit in art, particularly the peach. Often, it signified more than mere sustenance. In classical times, it was linked to paradise, renewal, and immortality. The peach makes me think of the apple in the Garden of Eden. A symbol of temptation and forbidden knowledge. Both fruits bear the weight of human desires and our complex relationship with nature. Gauguin's peaches exude a carnal ripeness. This work is a modern take on age-old themes. In a cyclical return, these symbols are continually re-imagined, reflecting our changing relationship with nature, desire, and mortality.
