Eyvind Earle, an American artist with a background in animation, painted *Green Valley* with gouache, layering the pigments to get these striking effects. Earle had a meticulous approach. Look closely and you'll notice the density of detail, an almost obsessive buildup of the image. Notice the stark contrasts. The artist builds up textures and layers to give the impression of density, and this takes time. The landscape is a study in contrasts, between light and shadow, chaos and order. A master of glazing, Earle was known for layering transparent coats of gouache to create luminosity, yet the artist balances the build-up of detail with an astute awareness of simplified shapes. The picture has been carefully built, stroke by stroke, with incredible control. Earle spent over a decade working for Walt Disney Studios, and you see that attention to detail here. The painting is an example of how craft techniques and design sensibilities intersect with the world of fine art.
