Sonia Delaunay made "Composition 24" with what looks like watercolor, a cool and crisp exploration of pattern. I love how the blues, in their different shades, feel so deliberate, like each choice was a little experiment. Look at where the darker blue and lighter blue meet, a dance across the whole composition, creating a rhythm that's both calming and energizing. The fan shapes, carefully drawn, are so precise, like the artist is trying to reach a perfect geometry. Delaunay's work reminds me a little of Hilma af Klint, especially in the way that both artists approach abstraction as a way to get to something deeper, something beyond what we can see. But where af Klint feels like she's channeling something mystical, Delaunay feels more grounded, more interested in the pure visual experience of color and form. Art is just an ongoing conversation, right?
