Here we have River Landscape on the Vecht (?), with Figures on a Road near a Haystack, a pencil drawing by Abraham Rutgers, made sometime in the 17th century. Its monochromatic palette immediately conveys a sense of quietude. The composition is structured around a road which leads the eye into the distance, flanked by buildings and figures. Rutgers employs line and form to define space and objects: the strokes are soft, suggesting a hazy atmosphere. Buildings and vegetation are rendered with subtle variations in tone and texture. The use of perspective is of particular interest, with the artist employing scale to convey depth. The figures and houses become smaller as they recede into the distance, creating a sense of spatial recession. Rutgers masterfully manipulates the intrinsic qualities of his medium to produce a complex image which challenges our understanding of landscape art and representation.
