Selma Sandler created this Weather Vane, of unknown date, which depicts a figure of Liberty holding an American flag. Sandler, living through times of immense change, might have been contemplating the symbolism and reality of American ideals. The figure of Liberty, clad in classical robes, raises questions. Who is granted liberty, and who is denied? The American flag, with its stars representing unity, could signify both promise and exclusion, especially considering the historical context of immigration, civil rights and social justice movements in the US during Sandler’s lifetime. This weathervane makes us consider America's direction, its shifting winds of change, and reflect on the meaning of freedom for diverse groups. It stands as a reminder to examine the gap between the nation's founding principles and the lived experiences of its people.
