Larry Fink made this photograph at Club Cornich in New York City. I love how Fink captures a moment that feels both intimate and performative. The black and white tones create a stark contrast, highlighting the textures of skin, glass, and fabric. The woman's hands, adorned with rings and red nail polish, clutch a glass, a sliver of the contents lapping on her lip. There's a tactile quality to the image, as if you could reach out and feel the condensation on the glass or the smoothness of her skin. The composition is cropped and a bit jarring. It reminds me of Nan Goldin, with its raw, snapshot-like aesthetic, and the way it captures the energy and immediacy of a specific time and place. I'm left with the feeling that the photo is not just documenting a scene, but inviting us to reflect on the way people make images that allow us to be together, or apart, in a crowd.
