This page from a book was written by Joseph van Huerne, who lived between 1752 and 1844. It is a trilingual list of fish, written in Dutch, Latin and French. At the time this was made, Latin was still used in academic settings, so this list would have been used by scientists, doctors, and other academics in the region of Flanders where Van Huerne was working. The use of three languages shows us that it was important to Van Huerne that his work be accessible to as many people as possible. He was participating in a wider project of scientific investigation, and his multilingualism was part of that. As a historian, I would want to know how this list was circulated. Who was it for? How did people use it? With further investigation, we can place this document in its proper context and better understand its significance.
