Curatorial notes

Christoffel van Sichem II created this ornament with gemstones and a celestial globe in the 17th century. The symmetrical composition immediately draws the eye to the center, where a large, geometric gemstone dominates, reflecting the period's fascination with symmetry and order. Above the gemstone, a celestial globe is depicted, further enriched with hybrid figures of women with wings and fantastic animal heads. The fine lines and detailed patterns are characteristic of Sichem’s work in woodcut. This image challenges fixed meanings, inviting a deeper contemplation of the symbolic structures that underpin our understanding of the cosmos. The gemstone and globe act as signs within a semiotic system, reflecting cultural codes related to wealth, knowledge, and power. These elements are not merely decorative; they invite us to consider how art destabilizes established meanings and engages with new ways of thinking about space and representation.
