Elihu Vedder created "Dawn" using pastel and pencil on paper. Note how the artist’s application of chalky pastel creates a soft, dreamlike vision. The figure has a strong presence, but is not quite tangible. Vedder has structured the composition around the contrast between organic forms and geometric ones. The softness of the human form and swirling sky is grounded by the solid, constructed steps and wall. The figure’s body is modeled with careful attention to light and shadow which gives her a sculptural quality, while the linear quality of the steps and wall contrast with the body's fluid, natural lines. The butterfly wings act as a symbolic element, suggesting transformation and the ethereal quality of the dawn. Vedder seems to destabilize the traditional symbolic associations of dawn as purely optimistic. The figure is descending; is she bringing light to the world, or turning away from it? This duality enhances the artworks depth, inviting a broader interpretation of beginnings.
