Editor: Here we have an untitled photograph by Lucian and Mary Brown showing a little girl and a boy on a bed. It's a small print, only about 4 by 5 inches, and the tonality is quite strange, almost ghostly. What strikes you most about the composition? Curator: The reversed tonality immediately brings to mind the photographic negative, which then draws attention to the image as a constructed object. The subjects, bathed in this ethereal light, are less portraits and more formal elements within a study of light and shadow. Editor: So you see the distortion of light as key to understanding it? Curator: Precisely. The formal qualities supersede the narrative. The stark contrasts and unusual presentation invite us to analyze the visual relationships first and foremost. I find the textural juxtapositions of the smooth wall and patterned blanket particularly interesting. What about you? Editor: I agree, the focus on form definitely reshapes my understanding of the scene. I initially missed the formal elements.
