This photograph by Walker Evans captures a street scene, frozen in time. Look at how the light falls across the wooden planks of the buildings, creating a stark, almost graphic pattern. I wonder what it was like for Evans, setting up his camera on that street. Did he wait for the right moment, the right arrangement of figures? Those three men, posed so casually yet formally, seem to be waiting, too. They are waiting in front of a barber shop. I find myself drawn to the texture, the way the grain of the wood and the rough surface of the street are rendered in shades of gray. It reminds me of the way we experience the world through touch, through the physicality of our bodies. It makes me think about how artists are always looking, always framing the world in their own unique way, inviting us to see things we might otherwise miss. Just like these men caught on camera, we're all part of a bigger picture.
