Gustave Loiseau made The Pont Henri IV Notre Dame de Paris in the Snow, and I see a kind of blizzard of marks, all broken color, that somehow cohere into a scene. The painting has this great way of making everything feel soft and gauzy. Look at how the grays and blues mix with touches of white, it gives the whole scene an airy, dreamlike quality. The texture isn't smooth; you can see the individual brushstrokes. I love the way Loiseau used these visible strokes to capture the feeling of snow – the way it falls, the way it sits on surfaces. There's one dark brown block with white snow on top in the foreground, that anchors the whole picture, it's a really satisfying shape. Loiseau was doing something similar to Monet, but also very much his own thing; you can see how the Impressionists were all working to capture the fleeting moments of light and atmosphere, each in their own way. Ultimately, art is all about how we see, and Loiseau definitely gives us a fresh way to look at a snowy day in Paris.
