Juliao Sarmento created "Joan," an installation that confronts viewers with themes of absence, voyeurism, and the objectification of the female form. Sarmento, who emerged during a period of political upheaval in Portugal, often uses fragmented narratives to explore psychological states. Here, the headless mannequin, perched precariously on a shelf, evokes a sense of vulnerability and displacement. The accompanying framed image hints at exoticized landscapes, creating a tension between the domestic and the foreign, the familiar and the other. The female figure, devoid of agency and identity, becomes a site onto which viewers project their own desires and interpretations. Sarmento challenges traditional representations of women in art by presenting a figure that is both present and absent, inviting us to question the power dynamics inherent in looking. The artwork stirs a mix of discomfort and curiosity. It compels us to consider the ways in which the female body is often fragmented, commodified, and displayed within cultural and social structures.
