Eyvind Earle made this decorative panel, In a gothic garden, at an unknown date using what looks like silkscreen or a similar technique to create flat, luminous color. It's all about the layering, the way the pinks and oranges bleed into each other like a sunset seen through a kaleidoscope. Look at the surface - it's so smooth, almost unreal, yet there’s this vibrant energy, a pulse of contrasting colours. You can sense the hand of the artist in the careful placement of each shape, each figure, and each tree. Take the figure in the center, slightly elevated above the other two. The way she seems to float there, so serene, her long dress cascading down like a waterfall of patterns. Earle reminds me of some of the early decorative work of someone like Gustav Klimt, but with a mid-century modern twist. This piece exists in a dreamlike space between graphic design and painting. And like all good art, it leaves you with more questions than answers.
