Romul Nutiu made "Dynamic Universe II" using a whole lotta paint, and probably a brush or two. It's like he’s wrestling with the cosmos right on the canvas. I love the way those blacks and yellows are slugging it out, those assertive strokes. It’s a messy, vibrant struggle, not some neat and tidy picture of space. You can feel the push and pull. Check out the turquoise swirls, they cut through the heavier blacks, just like a flash of insight. Nutiu wasn’t trying to hide the process, it’s all right there, thick and juicy. This reminds me of de Kooning’s chaotic energy, that feeling that a painting is never really finished, just caught in a moment of intense action. Art is like this conversation across time, a big, beautiful, unresolved argument.
