Philippe Jacques de Loutherbourg created this drawing of a family with cattle pausing at a spring, using pen and brown ink with brush in brown and gray ink. It's hard to say exactly when, but we can assume it was made in France in the late 18th or early 19th century. During this time, rural life was often romanticized in art, as seen here. But this image can also be interpreted through a social lens: images of peasants can be read as a kind of commentary on social class and the economic structures of the time. To understand this image better, you could research the history of agriculture in France during this period, or delve into the artist's biography to see if he had any particular political affiliations. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of the painting's message and its place in history.
