This Design for a Frame by Edouard Bouvenne teems with symbolic richness. Observe the grotesque mask at its apex and flanking dolphins: powerful visual motifs rooted in antiquity, here intertwined with floral elements, peacocks and owls. The mask, a relic from ancient theater and festivals, embodies primal energies and chaos. It is a motif that surfaces in myriad forms across cultures, from the protective gargoyles of Gothic cathedrals to the menacing visages of tribal rituals. Here, it seems to ward off evil, a guardian of the threshold. And consider the dolphins; symbols of guidance and salvation in ancient Greek mythology, transformed here, almost playfully. These motifs, however, have evolved over time, shaped by the collective unconscious. They resonate with our deepest fears and desires, engaging us on a profound, subconscious level. Note the peacock and owl on either side, signifying vanity and wisdom respectively; we see the cyclical progression of symbols, constantly resurfacing and evolving through history, each era imbuing them with new significance.
