This photograph captures the old Sint-Martinuskerk te Neer, and it's all about the subtle dance of light and shadow. The artist, from Monumentenzorg, used the camera as a tool for documentation, but also, inadvertently, as a means of personal expression. Look at the way the light rakes across the brickwork, creating a textured surface that feels almost tactile. The sepia tone gives the image a timeless quality, blurring the lines between past and present. And then there's that single cross, jutting out from the wall. It's a small detail, but it speaks volumes about faith, history, and the enduring power of simple symbols. It reminds me a little of Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographs of industrial structures, but with a softer, more human touch. It’s a reminder that even the most objective forms of artmaking are still shaped by our own subjective experiences. And that, for me, is where the magic happens.
