This -Money Converter (registering)- still bank, was made by an anonymous artist, and I wonder about their choice of materials and what their process was. I think of the color as not just red, but almost a red thought, how that singular color, applied with a kind of everyday-ness, can flatten so much into one idea. Notice how the color is applied evenly, methodically, to this small, box-like structure. It doesn’t seem concerned with showing off fancy brushwork. The imagery is almost like a child’s book, or maybe a German Expressionist woodcut. It strikes me, with its little dials and numbers, as a kind of early prototype for how we deal with money today. Currency is something we don’t touch anymore, but rather a digital transaction, and this object reminds me of that transition from the physical to the intangible. Like, what if Paul Klee designed a bank?
