This photograph of the Huis de Haan or Tempeliershuis in Zierikzee was captured by an anonymous photographer. I wonder about the relationship between photography and painting and the conversations they have had over the centuries! In this image, the light is very soft, almost dreamlike, and gentle gradations of tone describe the facade of the building. The photographer is playing with shadow and light to emphasize the architectural details and the texture of the brick. I like the way photography can be an index, capturing details that can be easily overlooked. The photographer has framed the building in a way that encourages viewers to appreciate its historical significance and beauty. It seems to me that artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity.
