Curatorial notes

August Allebé made this sketch of a seated man with pencil on paper, but when exactly we don’t know. Born in Amsterdam in 1838, Allebé’s art embodies the spirit of the Dutch Impressionist movement, an art scene influenced by the social realism of the time. Consider the sketch’s subject, a man captured in a moment of repose. His posture, with hands clasped behind his head, suggests a quiet contemplation. Is it freedom or confinement? The unfinished nature of the sketch invites us to contemplate the subject's inner world, hinting at stories and emotions beyond what is immediately visible. Allebé's role as director of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten also influenced a generation of artists. It shaped the course of Dutch art history. How might our understanding of identity and emotion shift when we focus on the small and intimate moments of life?
