Petrus Cool created this engraving, "Reuk," which translates to "smell," as part of a series representing the five senses. In this allegorical scene, we see a goddess-like figure, "Odoratus," regally seated on a floral chariot drawn by scent hounds. These dogs, historically bred for their keen sense of smell, are used to convey the idea of scent as a powerful, guiding force. The presence of the dogs also invites questions about the cultural biases embedded in the history of senses. Who gets to define what is considered a pleasing or offensive smell? On the left, we can see people relaxing in nature and on the right, we see a domestic scene inside. What does it mean to experience a sense of smell in these different environments?
