Agostino Bonalumi made this "Untitled" artwork using shaped canvas, stretching our understanding of what a painting can be. The monochromatic blue, almost like a still, silent pool of water, creates a mesmerising experience. Bonalumi's manipulation of the canvas brings painting into the realm of sculpture. The raised form, seemingly simple, invites the viewer to consider light and shadow, presence and absence. The way light delicately defines the edges of the sphere feels almost like breathing, a subtle yet constant shift. Looking at this, I am reminded of Lucio Fontana, who punctured the canvas, and of course, other Italian artists pushing the boundaries of painting to embrace space and form. Like them, Bonalumi shows how art is an ongoing dialogue, an invitation to see the world anew. Isn't it beautiful how something so simple can hold so much?
